You Need to Pay Attention to Michele Bachmann
I know a lot of us aren’t that political, and many haven’t been paying much attention to the Republicans clawing all over each other for the presidential nomination next year, but if you have a Twitter account or read the news you have probably heard of Michele Bachmann, the congresswoman from Minnesota who is quickly floating to the top of the short list of GOP bigots likely to face Barack Obama at the ballot box next year.

Marcus Bachmann
You know Bachmann—she’s the one who married her queeny husband Marcus (who runs a clinic that offers “ex-gay” therapy for self-hating homos) after both of them experienced a vision from God. Well, despite the fact that she is a religious extremist with virtually no record of accomplishments in congress besides forwarding her hateful moral agenda, she won the Iowa Straw Poll over the weekend, one of the first real litmus tests to determine who is a “top tier” candidate for the 2012 election.
Here’s the thing about Michele Bachmann: she is not Sarah Palin. She is smarter, she’s more highly regarded, she has a more drive and she has none of Palin’s political baggage. She’s also about twice as crazy.
Want to know just how Bachmann feels about you? Here’s what she said in 2004 re: the gays:
“It’s a very sad life. It’s part of Satan, I think, to say that this is ‘gay.’ It’s anything but ‘gay.’ It leads to the personal enslavement of individuals. Because if you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair, and personal enslavement. And that’s why this is so dangerous. We need to have profound compassion for people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life, and sexual identity disorders.”
Bachmann was faced with this gem as recently as this past weekend, when she appeared on Meet the Press after her Iowa victory, and she stood by it, adding stupidly, “I am not anyone’s judge.” In it, she displays her profound ignorance (or worse, her straight up denial of facts) by calling homosexuality a “dysfunction” and a “disorder”, despite the fact that the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a disorder in 1973, with the American Psychological Association following suit a few years later.
We need to face a scary reality, guys. Barack Obama’s approval ratings have dropped below 40 percent, the lowest they have ever been. Meanwhile, Michelle Bachmann, even with her long history of documented bigotry, is well on her way to securing the nomination (with only Texas governor Rick Perry posing much of a threat now, and he’s about as bad as she is). Remember what happened in 2010, when the GOP took back the senate and the house? We need to face the real possibility that Michele Bachmann could be the next president.
She supports a federal ban on gay marriage. She has vowed to reinstate Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. She opposes ENDA, which would defend you from discrimination in the workplace. She thinks the love you share with your partner is Satanic, dysfunctional and sad. Under President Bachmann, you can expect the momentum toward full civil rights we have achieved over the past few years (with little thanks to President Obama, it’s true) to be rolled back. You’d see full Republican control of government, and the introduction and passage of who knows what kind of hateful legislation aimed and subjugating LGBT people even further.
You need to pay attention to Michele Bachmann in the coming months, as she calculates her way to the presidency. And you need to be terrified.

This woman makes me sick. And whenever she’s asked about her clinic, all she does is respond with “I’m running for the presidency of the United States.” Because, obviously, that’s a legit f*cking answer.
I’ve been following this woman for awhile. I constantly keep up with politics because we need to know what crazy sh*t the right wing is going to be doing and what rights they can take away. Rights that we’ve worked hard for.
I hope those that aren’t interested in politics at least keep any eye out for this woman, Perry, and even Mitt Romney. All of them signed the Marriage pledge. Not only does it ban same-sex marriage, but it also bans pornography. (Not just gay porn either. All of it.)
So yeah, keep an eye out for these crazies!
<3
I agree this woman is nuts. I agree we need to be frightened that she is rising to the top of the GOP. That said, I do believe we need a new president. I don’t hate Obama nor do I disagree with all of his politics. But as you said about Bachmann, he had, “no real record of accomplishments” and yet his message spread like wildfire and he won the ticket. I think his message was an inspirational one. But he’s a motivational speaker. He got into office (yes, yes he inherited many issues) and figured out he didn’t know how to drive after all. Our country is going down the tubes and I don’t know if there is a way out of this hole. I do not believe we will be “saved” by the likes of Bachmann or Obama. I do hope we find someone business savvy, an economics wiz, and genuine. What is Bill Nye the Science Guy doing nowadays?
I for one am terrified ! It’s been said that the eyes are the mirror to the soul, take a look at the crazed look in her eyes,I ask would you want this self righteous, hateful woman running our country ? I think not !
“Because if you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair, and personal enslavement. And that’s why this is so dangerous.”
I love how she didn’t even explain why, she didn’t provide any factual evidence, she just said “because”, called the gay kids names, and said “that’s why”. Fuck this bitch, she better not fucking win.
This is absurd. Let me list the reasons:
1.) The Ames Straw poll is total BS. Mike Huckabee and Pat Robinson are past winners. The election is 15 months away, all this does is give her a bump in media attention.
2.) There is no evidence she is smarter or dumberer than Sarah Palin, she is no more ‘highly regarded’, and the only extra ‘drive’ she has is that she hasn’t quit elected office halfway thru her term.
3.) She is completely batshit crazy and far too extreme for rational, clear-thinking Republicans who make up the majority of the party. There is no chance in hell she will come close to the nomination. Even if she did, Barack Obama would walk all over her. Again, 15 months till the election, the President’s poll numbers mean little to the election at this point.
4.) 2010 was different, local elections, local politics. 2012 is a national election and her brand of crazy just won’t play nationwide. Also, in 2010 the batshit crazy wing of the Republican party only managed to take back the House, not the Senate.
That said, she is a truly frightening individual and we all should work to make sure she is not elected to another term in the House, because that is the only election she’ll be standing for in November 2012.
What I’d like to know is how in the hell this woman is being taken seriously as any sort of political authority.
She’s NUTS. The next logical leap is that the only way she’s even possibly in the running for the presidency is that she has support from American citizens. I find that even more terrifying than anything else.
I hope her husband is f*cking other men behind her back and gets caught doing it. “Pray away the gay” my ass.
No. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Why, why does she have to be so blind and stupid? I do. not. want her to take over this country. *sigh* When there are finally women running for president, I guess they have to be insane b****es.

Way to change everyones mind idiot.. let people decide for themselves.. your trying to single out the gays to vote against her when really most people will not support gay marriage in the first place.. i for one do not care but she isnt that bad and who cares what her husband does? really
“when really most people will not support gay marriage in the first place.”
I think you mean, ‘you’ will not support gay marriage in the first place. I would like to see the recent evidence that makes you think the majority of America would vote against gay marriage. You know, despite the rapid improvement in gay equality that has erupted due to public voting.
Times are changing.
We never would have thought gay marriage would be allowed in any state.
Sociologist predict that within the next 10 years, it will be legal in all 50 states. Why? Simply because the current generation (the millennials aka Generation Y) are far more accepting to homosexual culture and acts. Generation Y ranges from people born in the mid 70s to mid 90s. Studies show that the later in Generation Y a person was born, the more accepting they will be when they become adults. This means…when all of the 90s babies become politicians, we will see a drastic change to society. Will we see that more equal rights acts be passed. We eventually will see total equality.
I am a registered Dr. of Sociology and you cannot argue with the facts, sir. I’m sorry.
She is freakin’ lunatic!!! There is no way she will win the general election. She doesnt skew enuf to all the voting demos. Obama (sadly) does, but not for long… Has anyone been curious about Ron Paul???
This is the woman who said Melissa Etheridge is paying the price for being gay through her struggle with breast cancer. “Unfortunately she is now suffering from breast cancer, so keep her in your prayers,” she said in November 2004. “This may be an opportunity for her now to be open to some spiritual things, now that she is suffering with that physical disease. She is a lesbian.” Honestly? Such a bag of nuts. Remember that other video where she claimed Terri Schiavo was healthy (suffering from MASSIVE brain damage) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f13Dj2HaRWg. I literally roll my eyes and shudder with terror at the idea of her taking place in office.
well done; she is scary; i’m very political…i’m a member of moveon.org; and many gay political organizations; tommy we must be scared of all republicans; i’m scared young gays aren’t following politics more; like the bullying of gay teens in high school; the religious right is behind this because of the laws forbiding teachers from discussing any gay issues thanks to the Michelle Bachmans; and her religious right allies; et all
